Emmanuel Macron will visit Spain on September 29 and 30 / The French president will meet with Pedro Sánchez

French President Emmanuel Macron will make a two-day state visit to Spain on September 29 and 30 to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries. This will be the first state visit by a French president to Spain since 2009, according to the Spanish Government and the Élysée Palace.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will host a gala dinner in honor of the French leader. On September 30, Macron is scheduled to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid.

The discussions will focus on major European and international issues, including the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. The two leaders will also address defending democracy and protecting young people from the challenges posed by social media and artificial intelligence.

Macron's last visit to Spain took place in January 2023, when he signed a friendship treaty with Sánchez. The document has not yet been ratified by the Spanish side, amid opposition from the right to certain provisions. Macron returned to Spain last summer, to Seville, for the UN Conference on Financing for Development.
