Pedraza, located in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, about 90 minutes from Madrid, is a medieval town with a single entrance, a wooden gate 3 meters wide and high.
This gate, designed in the Middle Ages, was used for the access of carts and horses, and has now become a symbol of the locality. Although it used to be closed at night, access is now free, but difficult for vehicles. The cobbled streets inside are narrow and winding, and the stone houses with red roofs add a special charm.
Among the attractions of the town are Castillo de Pedraza, a 13th-century castle, and the old prison, as well as Casa del Aguila Imperial, transformed into a museum. An ideal time to visit is in July, when the Concierto de las Velas takes place, an annual event with lit candles and outdoor classical music concerts, accessible to locals and visitors with tickets.
