The incident took place on the night of July 19, in Ciudad Rodrigo, a medieval town in the province of Salamanca, during the celebrations organized for the second World Cup title won by the Spanish national team. Hundreds of people had gathered around the Arbol Gordo fountain to celebrate the victory of the national team, which defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final. Shortly after midnight, the upper part of the monument broke off, injuring several people. Local authorities expressed condolences to the family of a child who was affected by the incident, emphasizing that the entire community feels this loss. The town hall stated that what should have been a celebration turned into a tragedy. Spain thus obtained its second World Cup title in history, after the one in 2010.
