Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has decreed three days of national mourning. Relatives of the passengers gathered at a school in Urda, where they received psychological support, while the Civil Guard opened centers for collecting DNA samples and identifying the victims.

The investigation launched by the authorities is focused on the causes of the collision, after the Transport Minister cited possible human error and inexplicable circumstances. The accident has revived criticism regarding the maintenance of infrastructure and the safety of the Spanish railway network. On Thursday, train drivers went on strike to demand additional security measures.

Two trains collided on Wednesday morning in the municipality of Urda, in the Castile-La Mancha region of Spain, after the Renfe train struck an Iryo private operator train from behind. The Iryo train had been forced to stop on the same line following a computer failure in the railway security system.

Approximately 550 people were on board the two trains. The impact threw two carriages of the Iryo train off the embankment, while rescuers continued search operations on Thursday among the twisted wreckage. Authorities announced more than 100 injured people, several of whom remained hospitalized, warning that the death toll could rise.
