At least 10 people have died after two high-speed trains collided in the province of Toledo, Spain, on the Madrid–Andalusia route. The accident led to the suspension of rail traffic, and emergency teams were mobilized to rescue and evacuate the passengers.
The collision occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time, between the towns of Los Yébenes and Urda. Involved in the accident were an AVE train that had departed from Madrid for Seville and an Iryo train traveling in the opposite direction. According to reports carried by El País, one of the trains hit the rear of the other, and two carriages reportedly derailed and fell down an embankment.
Numerous passengers were injured, and local authorities prepared a sports hall to provide assistance. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his deep sorrow and announced that he was keeping in contact with the Transport Minister and the president of the Castilla-La Mancha region.
Government sources cited by El País are considering possible human error following a failure of the main signaling system. The investigation is ongoing.
