At least 39 people died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, following the collision between two trains that occurred in the province of Toledo, between the towns of Los Yébenes and Urda. The accident took place shortly after 09:00, on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed line, bringing rail traffic to a halt.
Spanish authorities sent mobile intensive care units and a logistical support vehicle from the Andalusian Health Service to the scene of the tragedy. Emergency teams are continuing rescue operations and providing care to those affected.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was shocked by the accident and expressed the Government’s solidarity with the victims and their families. He said that he was in contact with the Transport Minister and the president of the Castilla-La Mancha region.
The accident is the second fatal incident involving high-speed trains in Spain in 2026. In January, 45 people died in Adamuz. A possible rail fracture was identified during the investigation, without definitively establishing the cause.
