More than 1,000 people died in Spain in June due to the effects of the heatwave, according to estimates from the Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid.
The toll of 1,029 deaths is more than twice as high as that recorded in June 2025 and represents the highest number for this month since the introduction of the mortality monitoring system. Most victims were elderly, and the heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, made June 2026 the second hottest June recorded in Spain.
Authorities warn that episodes of extreme heat are becoming more frequent and intense against the backdrop of climate change.
