The heatwave that affected Europe this summer had a devastating impact on mortality, according to EuroMOMO data. In the week ending June 28, approximately 14,260 deaths were recorded above the normal level, of which over 12,000 were among the elderly. Experts warn that the actual number of victims could be even higher, as many deaths are attributed to conditions such as heart attacks, without mentioning heat as a triggering factor.
Germany reported the most deaths, with 6,830 attributed to the heatwave, followed by the United Kingdom with approximately 2,700, France with 2,000, and Spain with nearly 1,000. Experts emphasize that climate change amplifies the frequency and intensity of these heatwaves, and Europe is facing one of the most severe starts to summer in history. The deadliest heatwave episode was in 2003, when approximately 70,000 people died.
