The French public health agency announced on Sunday that France has recorded over 1,000 excess deaths during the extreme heatwave affecting Europe, emphasizing that the actual number could be higher.

Most of the deaths were among the elderly, and the toll could rise as information is gathered from care homes and private residences. The heatwave, which began on June 20, is considered the most severe in European history, where the climate is warming faster than the global average. Although extreme temperatures have decreased in most of France, some regions in the northeast remain under heatwave warnings. Health Minister Stéphanie Rist warned that the effects of the heatwave could continue to be felt for up to ten days after the weather cools, affecting all population groups.

Temperatures have exceeded records in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, and Poland.
