In a speech in Frankfurt, Christine Lagarde, the president of the ECB, emphasized the urgent need for actions to strengthen European integration, mentioning that the export-based business model is no longer adequate. She highlighted Europe's vulnerability, exacerbated by dependence on third countries for security and raw materials, and mentioned recent global shocks, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Lagarde stressed the importance of a truly integrated Single Market, warning that inaction for six years would be irresponsible. She also pointed out that simplifying the decision-making process could improve competitiveness. However, she acknowledged that the structural weaknesses of the European Union remain a long-term threat, gradually eroding economic growth.
