The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has introduced a tax of 2 euros for packages valued up to 150 euros arriving from outside the European Union, aimed at reducing deliveries from Chinese e-commerce companies and increasing budget revenues. The tax, applied to packages arriving after January 1, has had a negative impact on the Italian logistics sector, with a 36% decrease in small packages processed in the first half of January compared to the previous year.
Logistics companies and airport operators claim that many cargo flights have been redirected to other airports in the EU to avoid the tax, which severely affects businesses in Italy. Industry leaders warn that without the suspension or elimination of this tax, the logistics sector will continue to suffer losses, and goods will enter Italy through other routes, increasing pollution and shifting traffic to other countries. The official collection of the tax will begin in March, but companies will have to pay retroactively for packages arriving since January 1.
