King Charles III will bring together AI leaders for common rules on technology development

King Charles III will host a meeting this week at Dumfries House in Scotland with leaders from the artificial intelligence industry to discuss common principles for the development and use of the technology.

Executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic are expected to attend, along with the UK minister for AI. According to Buckingham Palace, the discussions will focus on using artificial intelligence for the benefit of society, protecting human dignity and contributing to the prosperity of people and the planet.

The meeting comes amid warnings about the risks of the accelerated development of AI. Two researchers from Anthropic recently argued that the technology could threaten humanity’s existence, while the company’s CEO, Dario Amodei, called for the pace of development to be slowed. An Anthropic report found that its models had been used to develop weapons, conduct cyber operations, carry out surveillance and commit fraud.

A global agreement will be difficult to achieve. Donald Trump has rejected the idea of slowing AI development, while China’s state media described the initiative as a possible Cold War scenario. The UK supports more flexible regulation and is providing early access to models for a national institute tasked with assessing risks.
