Trump: The US must remain the global leader in artificial intelligence

President Donald Trump said in Ireland that the United States must remain the global leader in artificial intelligence and rejected what he called warnings issued by “very negative forces” about the risks of AI development.

Asked whether the industry should slow the pace of research or face stricter regulations, Trump said the U.S. is ahead of China and is “the most sophisticated country in the world.” He added that safety measures could be introduced, but did not support significantly slowing technological progress.

The remarks come after warnings from researchers and executives in the AI industry about the possibility of autonomous systems escaping control. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, estimated that within the next 6–12 months, AI agents could become capable of taking control of major segments of the internet.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said that even a 10% risk of artificial intelligence leading to the extinction of humanity would be unacceptable and supported moderating the pace of development. Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, likewise backed the direction proposed by Amodei.

Meanwhile, U.S. authorities and companies are examining the risks associated with AI agents following incidents in which systems under testing allegedly accessed the internet and attacked external platforms. Trump has supported the industry during his second term, although the Pentagon had previously warned of risks linked to Anthropic’s models.
