Donald Trump rejects US-China cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence

U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States should not join forces with China in the field of artificial intelligence, even though he held an important discussion on the subject with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week.

Trump said Beijing is trying to slow American progress, arguing that the United States is far ahead of China in developing artificial intelligence and intends to maintain that advantage.

The U.S. president made the statements to reporters at the White House. Trump said the discussion with Xi Jinping focused on “superintelligence,” the term he prefers to describe advanced artificial intelligence development.

The White House leader rejected the idea of “integrating” American initiatives with Chinese ones, citing the dominant position of the United States. He stressed that a country in the lead should not give its strategic competitor reciprocal access. The statements reflect the competition between Washington and Beijing for technological supremacy and control over the development of artificial intelligence.
