U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he intends to ban the use of the term “artificial intelligence” in official documents and other contexts, arguing that the name is inaccurate. The statement was made in a post on the Truth Social platform, in which Trump also criticized The Wall Street Journal for continuing to use the acronym AI.
Trump said the term should be replaced with “superintelligence,” abbreviated SI, which he claims is already being used—or will soon be used—by almost everyone. The U.S. president believes that using the word “artificial” makes the technology seem fake.
“Shortly, we will officially ban the term ‘AI/Artificial Intelligence’ in all relevant documents and in any other context, because of its inaccuracy,” Trump wrote, as quoted by Reuters.
The president has been trying for several weeks to promote this change in terminology. Previously, he warned that the White House administration would consider those who continued to use the expression “artificial intelligence” to be “enemies.” It is not yet clear what measures would be used to enforce a potential ban or whether it would apply only to official communications.
