In a press conference, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Hungary will maintain the lowest energy prices in Europe, due to exemptions from sanctions for the Turkish Stream and Druzhba pipelines. Orban emphasized that these exemptions are essential for energy supply security and for keeping prices affordable for citizens. He also discussed with Donald Trump the necessity of using Russian oil, considering Hungary's dependence on Russian energy. Orban mentioned that without these exemptions, utility costs would have increased significantly.
Alongside the sanctions exemptions, Hungary will collaborate with the United States in the field of nuclear energy, including through the purchase of nuclear fuel from the American company Westinghouse and the development of small nuclear power plants. Orban emphasized that Hungary will continue to seek and diversify energy sources, including through the import of liquefied natural gas from the U.S.
Despite the Prime Minister's statements, a White House official clarified that the sanctions exemption is limited to one year. Orban criticized the Biden administration and expressed confidence that relations between Hungary and the U.S. will enter a "golden age." Trump also offered support for Orban in the perspective of the 2026 elections, highlighting his success in managing immigration.
