The United States has granted Hungary a one-year waiver from sanctions imposed on Russian oil and gas, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. This decision was made following a meeting between former President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has been praised for his anti-immigration policy. In exchange for the waiver, Hungary has committed to purchasing liquefied natural gas from the U.S. worth approximately 600 million dollars. Although the U.S. has recently imposed sanctions against major Russian oil companies, Hungary, which is significantly dependent on Russian energy, has failed to diversify its energy sources. This waiver comes at a delicate time for Orbán, with imminent legislative elections.
