Hungary hopes to obtain exemptions from US sanctions to continue imports of oil and gas from Russia, in the context of Viktor Orban's visit to the White House.

Hungary expresses its desire to be exempted from the sanctions imposed by the USA against the Russian oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft, in order to continue imports of oil and natural gas from Russia. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will address this issue in the meeting with American President Donald Trump on November 7.

Gergely Gulyas, Orban's chief of staff, stated that Hungary is in a special situation, being a landlocked country and lacking sufficient domestic energy production. Although the recent sanctions do not directly affect Hungary's supply, the Hungarian government is seeking confirmation of Trump's position. An alternative for supply could be the Adriatic pipeline from Croatia, but Hungary believes that the transit fees are too high and its capacity is insufficient. The sanctions imposed by the USA were a reaction to the lack of commitment from Russia in the peace process in Ukraine.
