Last month, the United States imposed sanctions on the two largest oil producers in Russia, marking the first such action since Trump's return to the White House, in an attempt to put an end to the war in Ukraine. Hungary, a close ally of the Kremlin and Trump, significantly depends on Russian energy resources.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban, accompanied by a delegation of six ministers, stated that he would request a waiver from these sanctions, considering that the measures are a mistake for Hungary. Orban emphasized the need to discuss with Trump about building a sustainable economic system, taking into account the potential impact of the sanctions on energy prices. The meeting is also expected to address the situation in Ukraine, and the meeting with Trump could provide Orban with a symbolic victory in the face of domestic political challenges, with elections looming.
