Discussions between the Greek Government and farmers blocking highways due to disputes over agricultural subsidies have reached an impasse. The Government spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, stated that there is no room for additional measures in favor of the farmers. In response, the farmers announced that they would intensify protests by increasing the number of roadblocks. They are protesting against delays in subsidy payments and rising energy costs, exacerbated by a smallpox outbreak that has led to the culling of over 450,000 animals.
Additionally, the farmers rejected the Prime Minister's invitation for discussions and accuse the Government of negligence in managing subsidies, which are suspended due to an investigation into fraudulent claims. Their protest movement aligns with similar actions in other European countries, targeting the Common Agricultural Policy and trade agreements.
