According to the forecasts of the Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI) agency, Germany will record a record trade deficit of 87 billion euros with China in 2025, thus exceeding the previous record of 84 billion euros from 2022. Christina Otte, the deputy director of GTAI, emphasized that this imbalance is not in Germany's interest.
China has become Germany's largest trading partner in the first eight months of 2025, following a decline in German exports to the USA, in the context of higher tariffs imposed by the Americans. Although Germany is seeking to diversify its supply chains to reduce dependence on China, its exports to this country are expected to decrease by over 11% in 2025, while imports from China are likely to increase, probably as a result of American tariffs.
