Germany plans to increase its defense spending by a third, allocating 109.7 billion euros in 2027, according to a budget draft consulted by Euractiv. This initiative precedes the NATO summit in Ankara, where allies will assess commitments to allocate 3.5% of GDP for defense by 2035.

The proposed budget would allow Germany to meet NATO objectives six years earlier. German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil emphasized that a balanced budget is not enough to defend against threats, such as those from Russia. Germany will exclude most defense spending from the 'debt brake' rule, and the total defense budget could reach 183.7 billion euros by 2030.

Approximately 11.6 billion euros of the 2027 budget will be allocated for support to Ukraine. The budget draft requires parliamentary approval and may undergo changes before the final vote.
