At least 14 people have died as a result of the floods that affected the Cuatro Esquinas mine in El Callao, Venezuela, caused by torrential rains in the southeastern region. Authorities have established a command post led by Brigadier General Gregory González Acevedo to coordinate recovery operations. The deaths occurred in three different shafts of the mine, and the search efforts began by pumping water to reduce its level. The floods led to the collapse of vertical mines, known as "râpe." El Callao, a town with approximately 30,000 inhabitants, largely depends on gold mining, an activity often marked by unsafe working conditions. In a broader context, former President Trump recently threatened Venezuela with severe consequences, demanding the return of prisoners and patients from psychiatric hospitals.
