The toll of the floods and landslides in Indonesia has reached 1,003 dead and 218 missing, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). These floods, caused by tropical storms and monsoon rains, have affected the provinces of North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh, leaving over 5,400 injured and 1.2 million people in temporary shelters. This is one of the most severe recent disasters in Sumatra, especially in Aceh, which previously suffered a devastating tsunami in 2004.
The estimated cost of reconstruction is 51.820 trillion rupiah (3.1 billion dollars). The Indonesian government has been criticized for not declaring a state of natural disaster, which could have facilitated rescue operations. President Prabowo Subianto visited the affected areas, ensuring that evacuation conditions are adequate, but acknowledged delays in accessing certain isolated areas.
