Romanian politics increasingly functions like a thick mattress under which responsibility, reforms, and truth are stuffed away, one after another. When the bill comes due, each party points the finger at the others, but very few want to pull out from under the rug the dirt of their own complicity.

Governing in secret

Romania is not short of speeches about principles; it lacks the courage to acknowledge who actually wants power and at what price. In this game, PSD does not seem willing to transparently assume a rapprochement with AUR, because such an alliance could erode precisely its electoral image as the system’s “respectable” party. AUR, for its part, has no interest in being seen alongside those it denounces as part of the old mechanism it claims to be fighting.

Reforms, the orphan with “loaded” paternity

The unpleasant truth is that Romania needs tough structural reforms, and these do not bring easy votes. That is why the parties that prosper electorally from promises of protection, money, privileges, and delay are not rushing to honestly manage the real cost of correction. They prefer to give the impression that someone else will do the dirty work, while they remain in the safe zone of moralizing opposition or shadow government.

Fleeing early elections

The solution of early elections is rejected not out of concern for stability, but out of political and electoral fear. PSD fears a collapse in favor of AUR, while President Nicușor Dan fears a possible suspension, so each invokes “healthy patriotism” as a reason to block a way out of the impasse. In reality, all these calculations converge on the same result: keeping the political spectrum at the controls, without any of the actors being forced to openly assume responsibility for the crisis.

The technocrat as a smokescreen

Hence the fascination with a technocratic prime minister, the ideal figure for mediation: exposed enough to absorb public discontent, yet politically weak enough not to disrupt the schemes of those pushing him forward. Such a prime minister would not be a solution of power, but a camouflage solution, steered from behind by parties that want both to avoid reform and to retain control. And that is not governance, but an elegant way of keeping responsibility under the rug.

Conclusion

What we are seeing is not merely a majority crisis, but a crisis of sincerity. The parties struggle to appear innocent, their adversaries are turned into the cause of all ills, and the electorate is sold the idea that each of them is the solution, even though they are all essentially working to avoid losing control of the game. Romania thus remains trapped in a politics of concealment, where the truth is in plain sight but is methodically pushed under the rug.
