The toll of the devastating floods in the region at the border between Nepal and Tibet has reached at least 470 dead, with over 1,000 people reported missing, according to authorities. Approximately 500 foreign nationals, including 33 British citizens, are among the missing. Search and rescue operations have been temporarily suspended due to the risks posed by a lake formed after a landslide, which has begun to overflow. The lake, with a water volume of over 2.5 million cubic meters, was formed after a mass of land collapsed from the Himalayas, causing a devastating flood that destroyed villages and infrastructure.

The formation of the lake following the landslide has further complicated rescue operations. If the natural barrier fails, a very large amount of water could suddenly rush downstream, causing a new flood. China has sent a team of specialists to monitor the lake.
