Nepalese authorities have recovered the remains of 1,399 people, while more than 4,000 remain missing after the August 26 flood

Nearly three weeks after the devastating flash flood in Nepal, authorities have recovered the remains of 1,399 people, while 4,089 people are still missing. Among those who cannot be reached are 610 foreign citizens.

According to the latest data provided by the Nepalese police, approximately 520 of the recovered remains are body parts, complicating the identification of the victims and the determination of the final toll. Only 103 bodies have so far been handed over to their families.

Due to the scale of the disaster, authorities were forced to bury some victims before their identities could be confirmed. Photographs were taken, distinguishing marks were recorded, and DNA samples were collected from nearly 1,300 sets of remains and approximately 1,900 relatives of missing people.

Search operations continue in the worst-affected districts, while the government prepares reconstruction efforts, estimated at more than 4.7 billion dollars.

Analyses indicate that the flash flood on August 26 was triggered by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier and carried ice, rocks, and mud. The disaster also affected Tibet, where 43 deaths and 519 missing people were reported.
