Canada announced on Friday that it has removed Syria from the list of states that support 'terrorism', a decision inspired by a similar move by the United States and the efforts of President Ahmed al-Sharaa's government to promote stability in the country. This decision coincides with the one-year anniversary of the removal of Bashar al-Assad. The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also revoked the 'terrorist' designation for the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which played a crucial role in the ousting of al-Assad. Although Canada included Syria on the list of state sponsors of terrorism in 2012, in the context of the civil war, the new measures reflect a change in approach, especially in light of the Syrian transitional government's efforts to build a stable and inclusive future. However, Canada maintains sanctions against 56 Syrian individuals, including former officials from al-Assad's government. Additionally, the Syrian leader, al-Sharaa, who has severed ties with al-Qaeda, is now promoting a moderate image and seeking to strengthen economic relations with the U.S. and the European Union.
