Sociologist Marian Preda, rector of the University of Bucharest, believes that AUR entering government is a scenario that can no longer be avoided and that snap elections represent a reasonable solution for overcoming the political crisis. He made the statements on Tuesday, September 15, in an interview with observatornews.ro.

Preda argues that AUR’s high standing in opinion polls shows that the party enjoys the support of a significant segment of the population, and that this electoral choice must be reflected in some form of government. However, the sociologist warns that a potential AUR government could quickly run out of steam, amid populist promises and a lack of concrete solutions beyond the party’s leaders.

In his view, snap elections should have been considered from the outset of the crisis, approximately four months ago. Preda anticipates a possible alternation between AUR and PSD in a potential election, amid low voter turnout, and says that Romanians’ choices have changed compared with the parliamentary elections of December 2024.

He warns that blocking AUR’s access to government could intensify political tensions. After an approximately two-year cycle, however, voters may seek other solutions, the sociologist also said.
