Former PNL president Valeriu Stoica argues that parties such as AUR should be allowed to enter government so voters can concretely assess how they exercise executive responsibilities. He made the statement on Digi24, in the context of an analysis of political developments in Romania and Europe.
Stoica believes that the strategy of isolating nationalist or far-right parties has not produced consistent results in all European countries. He cited examples such as Poland, the Netherlands and Italy, where right-wing parties have joined governing coalitions, and said that this policy is influenced by the historical trauma left by interwar Nazism.
In the former liberal leader’s view, today’s European democracies have sufficiently robust mechanisms to limit potential excesses and politically integrate parties that come to power. Stoica said that AUR includes people capable of holding public office and mentioned Petrișor Peiu, with whom he worked during the Radu Vasile government.
The former PNL president also said that AUR’s electoral success is based on a professional network and a modern communication system, which he considers stronger than those of the PNL and PSD. According to Stoica, this infrastructure, not just the image of leader George Simion, explains the party’s performance.
