Ludovic Orban stated on Monday that the PSD and AUR should jointly form the future government, in order to demonstrate to voters whether they are capable of governing Romania. The statement was made on RFI, ahead of the consultations at Cotroceni Palace for the appointment of a new prime minister.
The former prime minister maintains that responsibility for forming the Executive should fall to the parties he considers responsible for the collapse of the previous government.
“Those who broke up the coalition, those who initiated the no-confidence motion, should come up with the solution,” Orban said, asking President Nicușor Dan to give them the mandate to form a majority.
Orban criticized AUR’s exclusion from the calculations for the future government and argued that, despite differences in rhetoric, the party is in the same political sphere as the PSD. He described AUR as a party unprepared for government, saying that it has a “horn and shiny bodywork,” but neither an “engine” nor direction.
According to Orban, AUR holds approximately 20% of Parliament and should enter a coalition in order to concretely demonstrate its administrative capacity. Otherwise, keeping the party in opposition could support its electoral growth. The former prime minister also invoked the possibility of snap elections, considering them a democratic solution for overcoming the political crisis.
