President Nicușor Dan announced Wednesday evening, in Prague, that he will make the next appointment of prime minister conditional on excluding AUR from any governing formula. The head of state will hold new consultations with the parties on Monday at Cotroceni Palace and specified that that same afternoon he will nominate a person for the position of prime minister.
Nicușor Dan justified the decision by the mandate received from voters, which would entail maintaining the pro-Western direction and a stable financial trajectory. The president argued that AUR's participation in government could affect Romania's relations with its European partners and in the area of security.
The announcement comes after the government proposed by Siegfried Mureșan was rejected by Parliament on Wednesday. The cabinet received 182 votes in favor, 51 below the required threshold of 233. It is the second government rejected in the past three months, after the Adrian Veștea Cabinet, which had obtained 189 votes “for.”
The president said that he is considering several names for the position of prime minister, but will make the nomination only after the official consultations and discussions with the parties. He asked the political formations to organize their internal meetings and come on Monday with solutions that could be supported in Parliament.
