Nicuşor Dan, on a PSD-AUR government: “Neither PSD nor AUR, together, have a majority. There are other options too, such as a technocratic government or a rotating one.”

President Nicușor Dan stated on Tuesday, in New York, that Romania is within a constitutional 10-day period during which attention must be focused on the nomination of Siegfried Mureșan for the position of prime minister. The head of state specified that the designated prime minister must prepare the governing program and the list of ministers before the investiture vote in Parliament.

Nicușor Dan rejected the idea that a possible failure of the nomination would leave only the option of a PSD-AUR government. He emphasized that PSD and AUR do not together hold a parliamentary majority and called for discussions about other political formulas to begin only after the current procedure has concluded.

Asked about alternatives, the president mentioned a technocratic government and a formula based on rotating the prime ministership. He said that there are several possibilities, but that, at this moment, it must be determined whether the proposal for Siegfried Mureșan will pass Parliament or not.

The statements were made in the context of PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu having stated that he did not rule out forming a PSD-AUR government by 2028. Nicușor Dan said he hoped the nomination would succeed, while acknowledging that securing the investiture vote would be difficult.
