Siegfried Mureșan (PNL) is Nicușor Dan’s choice for the position of prime minister. Mureșan is tasked with forming a new Government to replace the Bolojan Cabinet, dismissed in May with the votes of the PSD and AUR.

Nicușor Dan stated that he will publish the decree in the Official Gazette after Mureșan accepts the nomination. The president says that Mureșan has asked for time to think.

To be invested, Siegfried Mureșan must secure the absolute majority vote of the deputies and senators, meaning a minimum of 233 votes in favor at the joint session of the Romanian Parliament.

PSD (122 parliamentarians - 86 deputies and 36 senators) declares that it is ready to take responsibility for leading the new Executive. Conditions: in order to grant the vote of confidence, PSD is calling for a solid program based on social protection and economic stability. In principle, the Social Democrats say they are counting on forming a clear majority around their own proposal (Sorin Grindeanu).

PNL (71 parliamentarians - 49 deputies and 22 senators) conditions its vote for a prime minister on clear performance and economic criteria, requiring the candidate to assume firm measures to reduce public spending and take into account the country’s budgetary realities. The Liberals are asking for the prime minister to be a credible person, while the proposed ministers must be strictly competent specialists.

AUR (91 parliamentarians - 63 deputies and 28 senators) says that it will not vote for any government in which it is not directly involved. Their non-negotiable condition is being brought into power, ruling out support for a Cabinet from the opposition.

USR (59 parliamentarians 40 deputies and 19 senators) supports the idea of forming two successive minority governments. USR says it places emphasis on profound structural reforms, combating corruption, and depoliticizing public institutions, refusing to give a blank check to a conventional government formula that does not guarantee these directions.

UDMR (32 parliamentarians - 22 deputies and 10 senators) declares that it remains open to dialogue for political stability, but makes any support or participation conditional on clear guarantees in the governing program regarding the rights of national minorities and administrative decentralization.

POT, led by Anamaria Gavrilă, announced on Thursday, following the consultations at Cotroceni Palace, that it would support in Parliament a “technocratic” government appointed by President Nicușor Dan.

The SOS Party, led by Diana Șoșoacă, refused consultations with President Nicușor Dan on the grounds that the party leader is abroad and only she can lead a delegation to present the position of this political formation.

The parliamentary group “Peace – Romania First” (PACE), a political structure in the Romanian Parliament formed through the separation and merger of several parliamentarians who were initially elected on the lists of the sovereignist parties S.O.S. Romania, the Young People’s Party (POT), and AUR, says that it will support any political Government that comes with a clear plan to restore the country. PACE states that the future prime minister must necessarily be a committed political figure, because a technocratic option would do nothing other than prolong instability.
