Gheorghe Piperea (AUR): Romania is heading “rapidly” toward snap elections

AUR says snap elections are the only solution to overcoming the political crisis and announces that it will not vote for a government in which the party is not involved. The statements were made on Monday at Parliament, amid negotiations to form a new executive led by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan.

MEP Gheorghe Piperea said that Romania has been in a “constitutional crisis” for more than four years and that snap elections would be the most appropriate solution for breaking the deadlock. He argued that, following the PSD’s decision not to support the Mureșan government, Romania is heading toward such a scenario, although organizing the elections depends on the country’s president.

AUR spokesperson and MP Ștefăniță Avrămescu reaffirmed the party’s decision not to vote for a government in which it is not involved and whose governing program it does not support. He said that the party would not take part in discussions with Siegfried Mureșan, citing criticisms he had previously made of AUR.

Avrămescu also said that negotiations on alliances and coalitions should have been held before the consultations at Cotroceni. Gheorghe Piperea also addressed the issue of the European Union’s future multiannual budget, estimating additional pressure on member states to finance it and repay debts.
