Dan Dungaciu: AUR Rejects Negotiations and Calls for Snap Elections

AUR First Deputy Chairman Dan Dungaciu said on Saturday, on Antena 3 CNN, that the party would not negotiate with any political formation and would not vote in favor of any potential prime ministerial candidate until AUR is treated like “any other party in Romania.”

Dungaciu said Siegfried Mureșan’s nomination would not pass Parliament and argued that the solution to overcoming the political deadlock is to hold snap elections. According to the AUR leader, snap elections would make it possible to abandon what the party calls the “cordon sanitaire” established around it.

The statements were made after consultations at Cotroceni Palace. Dungaciu said that, for the first time, he sensed that Romania’s president was not completely ruling out the possibility of snap elections, considering this a positive signal for the party.

Regarding the PNL, the AUR leader said the liberals must choose between submitting their mandate and risking failure to secure Parliament’s vote. He predicted that political tensions would intensify if there were a second nomination for the office of prime minister.

Dungaciu said the objective of the political discussions should be to form a majority capable of ensuring the government’s functioning, but ruled out any invitation being extended to Siegfried Mureșan.
