Siegfried Mureșan calls for dialogue with the Social Democrats: “PSD will have to choose whether it supports a pro-European government or whether it strengthens its partnership with AUR”

Siegfried Mureșan, designated prime minister by President Nicușor Dan, said on Friday evening that he would hold open discussions with the PSD to obtain the support needed for the Government’s investiture, but that he would not negotiate with AUR. The Liberal was nominated on Thursday to form the Executive.

At this moment, Mureșan is relying on 169 votes from the PNL, USR, and UDMR. A total of 233 votes are required for investiture, so the designated prime minister must secure additional support in Parliament.

He announced that, at the beginning of next week, he would present the main ideas of the governing program to the parties supporting him, then to the parliamentary group of national minorities and the PSD.

“The PSD will have to choose whether it supports a pro-European government or whether it strengthens its partnership with AUR. I will be open and willing to present our vision for Romania to them. Yes, I am glad to have a frank, open discussion with my colleagues from the PSD as well,” Siegfried Mureșan stated.

The designated prime minister specified that he would not go to the AUR group and that he would not modify his program to obtain the support of a party “that is not pro-European.” He nevertheless emphasized that he cannot control the individual votes of lawmakers, including those from AUR.

Mureșan warned that the alternative if the Government is rejected is the organization of snap elections.
