AUR are going to Cotroceni on Thursday to call for snap elections

AUR will attend Thursday’s consultations, starting at 9:30 a.m., at Cotroceni Palace to nominate a prime minister. The party will send its leader, George Simion, along with Dan Dungaciu and Petrișor Peiu, to the negotiations.

The party says it is maintaining the mandate it presented during previous rounds of talks with President Nicușor Dan. AUR representatives argue that Romania needs political legitimacy, not merely a new government, amid distrust in the institutions and in the country’s political direction.

Dan Dungaciu told AGERPRES that snap elections are the only solution for reducing social tensions and securing a four-year political mandate, which is necessary for substantial reforms. In his view, a temporary government could last at most one year or a year and a half before a new electoral cycle.

AUR also says it will not vote for an Executive in which it is not represented. The party makes parliamentary support conditional on formal and transparent negotiations, on an equal footing, as well as on the possibility of overseeing the implementation of certain measures from its own program. The party’s leaders say the refusal to cooperate does not come from them, but is the result of the “cordon sanitaire” established by the other parties.
