USR President Dominic Fritz announced on Wednesday that “the time has come to return to the people’s vote” after the Siegfried Mureșan government failed to win the investiture vote in Parliament.
“The political crisis created by the PSD and AUR is affecting prices, Romanian businesses, and people’s confidence in the future. Citizens must no longer stand by helplessly as they watch the chaos created by the PSD. USR is calling for early elections,” Dominic Fritz wrote on Facebook.
He pointed out that, after two rejected investiture attempts and months of crisis, “the president now has the constitutional instrument to dissolve Parliament.”
“People must be able to choose: reducing spending and reforming the state, or luxury planes for the PSD with support from AUR?” the USR politician stressed, adding that the party he leads refuses to endorse “a new PSD government, regardless of the packaging in which they will deliver it to us.”
We remind you that the Siegfried Mureșan government, supported by the right-wing PNL-USR-UDMR coalition, failed on Wednesday to secure the 233 votes required for investiture in Parliament, receiving only 182 votes “in favor.”
What the President of Romania said about early elections
In theory, the conditions for holding early elections have been met; however, there is no desire for this, except on the part of AUR. This is despite the fact that party leaders have not ruled them out in recent months.
According to the Constitution, “after consulting the presidents of the two Chambers and the leaders of the parliamentary groups, the President of Romania may dissolve Parliament if it has not granted a vote of confidence for the formation of the Government within 60 days of the first request and only after the rejection of at least two requests for investiture.”
President Nicușor Dan rejected on Tuesday, one day before the decisive vote in Parliament on the investiture of the government proposed by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan, the scenario of early elections.
“Early elections are not a solution. On the contrary, they would continue the instability and distrust of both Romanian citizens and financial markets,” Nicușor Dan declared.
AUR has insisted on early elections since the crisis began.
“I believe that following the failure of the Siegfried Mureșan proposal, early elections should follow,” said Dan Dungaciu, AUR’s first deputy president, on Monday.
