Siegfried Mureșan warns that snap elections could become necessary if the political deadlock cannot be overcome

Siegfried Mureșan, proposed for the position of prime minister by the PNL, USR and UDMR, said Monday in Strasbourg that snap elections are not wanted, but could become necessary if the political deadlock cannot be overcome.

The liberal MEP argues that there is currently no majority in Parliament for a reform-minded government. He outlined three options for forming the government: a PSD-AUR executive, which he says would keep Romania stuck, a reformist government, and a technocratic, non-political government. The PNL could support a technocratic prime minister only if he is not controlled by the PSD and commits to a modernization agenda.

Asked whether he could secure the 233 votes needed for investiture, Mureșan said he would try to form a majority around reforms if he is nominated by President Nicușor Dan.

The head of state is expected to hold consultations with the parties on Wednesday and announce the candidate for prime minister. Mureșan said that two months of an election campaign would be preferable to two and a half years of instability under a PSD-AUR majority.
