In response to severe criticism from the Trump administration, California has decided to revoke 17,000 commercial driver's licenses granted to individuals illegally in the country. The issue was brought to public attention after a tragic accident in Florida, caused by an unauthorized truck driver, resulting in three deaths. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that California's action reflects an acknowledgment of the mistakes made by the state, even though it initially defended its licensing standards. Duffy emphasized that his team will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that illegal immigrants do not drive commercial vehicles. Governor Gavin Newsom's office mentioned that all affected drivers had valid work permits, but the revocation of licenses was based on a law stating that they expire once the person's legal status in the U.S. ends.
