On Sunday, December 14, a tragic bus accident in the northwest of Colombia resulted in the death of 17 people, 16 of whom were high school students from the municipality of Bello, returning from a trip to the Caribbean coast. The bus fell into a ravine of about 40 meters, and the cause of the incident is still under investigation.
A survivor reported that they heard screams before losing consciousness. Among the victims is the bus driver, and 22 people were injured, three of whom are in serious condition. The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The accident area is known for the activities of the ELN guerrilla, which has imposed special security measures for rescue teams. In 2024, Colombia recorded an alarming average of 22 deaths per day from traffic accidents.
