Vishal Garg, the CEO of the fintech company Better, was fired on August 3, being replaced by Daniel Lewis, a hedge fund manager who joined the Board of Directors a week earlier.
Garg became known in 2021 when he fired 900 employees during a Zoom call, generating negative backlash. Now, he claims he was deceived by Lewis, who praised the company's strategy to gain the Board's trust. Better's sales have drastically decreased, from $1.5 billion in 2021 to $70 million in 2023, but Garg asserts that the firm is on track to reach $200 million this year.
He sent a letter to the Board requesting reinstatement and hired a lawyer. The new CEO filed a complaint, accusing Garg of violating federal securities laws. Garg has also been criticized for his comments about the laid-off employees, whom he accused of "stealing" from the company's funds.
