The WHO has issued a statement expressing concern that the chikungunya virus is spreading again, particularly in Europe, where around 800 imported cases have been reported in the last two months. The virus causes fever, joint pain and can lead to long-term disability. Local transmission has been observed in the south of France and a recent case has been reported in Italy. Chikungunya is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, with no specific treatment available.
