The National Public Health Organization of Greece (EODY) reported 45 new cases of West Nile virus infection in the last week, totaling 110 locally acquired infections as of August 12.
Of these, 81 cases affected the central nervous system, causing encephalitis, meningitis, and other neurological complications. Unfortunately, nine people have died, all of whom were over 65 years old, with an average age of 82 years. Currently, 35 patients are hospitalized, of which 16 are in intensive care. The Attica region is the most affected, with cases reported in various sectors of Athens and Piraeus.
Authorities warn that the actual number of infections could be much higher, estimating that for every severe case, there are approximately 140 asymptomatic infections. EODY has intensified epidemiological surveillance and is monitoring mosquito populations for the presence of the virus. In Romania, 10 cases of West Nile virus infection have been confirmed, including two deaths. Authorities recommend protective measures against mosquito bites.
