The cases of infection with the West Nile virus have alarmingly increased in Greece, with 157 sick individuals and 13 deaths reported since the beginning of the year.
The number of infections has quadrupled in just a few weeks, with most cases being recorded in the Athens area. The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, and most infected individuals do not show symptoms or have mild forms of the disease.
However, severe cases that affect the central nervous system occur especially in older individuals and those with pre-existing medical conditions, with manifestations such as encephalitis and meningitis. The World Health Organization has issued a warning regarding the increase in infections in southern Europe, calling for heightened vigilance from the affected states.
