During the same period, 58 cases of West Nile virus infection and three deaths were reported in Romania, according to data cited by Agerpres. The deceased were elderly and had comorbidities.

The most illnesses were recorded in the municipality of Bucharest, where 25 cases were detected. It was followed by Ilfov and Călărași counties, with six and four cases, respectively, as well as Giurgiu, with four. Other cases were reported in Argeș, Bihor, Brăila, Botoșani, Cluj, Galați, Harghita, Ialomița, Iași, Mureș, Satu Mare, Suceava, Teleorman and Vaslui.

Specialists recommend avoiding exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and using repellents and insecticides. Window screens, eliminating standing water and draining pools of water near homes can reduce the risk of infection.

The ECDC warns that the virus is spreading across Europe, alongside the spread of invasive mosquito species. Normally, most infections occur from summer through autumn, peaking in August and early September. Romania ranks third in Europe by the number of areas with local transmission, after Italy and Greece, with 14 affected areas.{"} placeholder? No, translate strictly. Need fix malformed trailing.
