European experts are sounding the alarm regarding the West Nile virus, which has been reported in 12 European countries, including Romania, ranking third in terms of the number of affected areas.
According to the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), Romania has recorded 34 cases of infection between June 3 and August 20, 2026, of which 26 were confirmed and 2 resulted in death. The majority of cases were reported in Bucharest, Călărași, and Giurgiu.
ECDC emphasizes the need for stricter surveillance and control measures, including monitoring of mosquitoes and community involvement.
The West Nile virus is transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, and symptoms can range from mild to severe, affecting the nervous system. INSP recommends preventive measures such as wearing clothing that covers the skin and eliminating standing water.
