China is facing a new increase in COVID-19 cases, with the virus becoming the main respiratory pathogen, surpassing seasonal flu for the first time this year, according to the South China Morning Post. This increase is associated with the Omicron variant NB.1.8.1, which dominates reported cases. In the week of July 13-19, 16.3% of tests for respiratory infections were positive for COVID-19, compared to 12.6% for flu. Doctors explain that the spread of respiratory viruses no longer follows seasonal patterns, and people's behavior during the summer, spending more time in enclosed spaces, facilitates transmission. Although the NB.1.8.1 variant is more contagious, it is not proving to be more dangerous. Health authorities recommend protective measures for vulnerable individuals and emphasize that, although the virus is evolving, the level of immunity in the population reduces severe risks. Experts estimate that the current wave will spread more slowly and will not exert major pressure on the healthcare system, but they warn of possible local outbreaks in the coming months.
