Stellantis is analyzing the possibility of closing or selling its plant in Brampton, Ontario, according to the Unifor union. This decision is influenced by the impact of U.S. trade tariffs on the North American auto industry.
The plant, which had approximately 2,200 employees, was closed in 2024 for retooling, but the work was suspended in 2025, and the production of the Jeep Compass model was moved to Illinois.
Unifor President, Lana Payne, mentioned that Stellantis has not issued an official closure notice, but intends to discuss with a company for a possible sale.
This situation highlights the effects of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
Negotiations between Stellantis and Unifor will address these issues, and the Canadian government is seeking solutions to maintain jobs.
Additionally, Stellantis has explored options for electric vehicle production in Canada together with Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology, but Unifor expresses concern about the involvement of a Chinese partner.
